Key West Weather by Month

Key West has the warmest winters in the continental United States and has never recorded frost. It is also the driest city in Florida, with just under 40 inches of rain a year. That does not mean every month is the same. Here is what the weather is really like at the Southernmost Point through the year, with averages from the National Weather Service’s 1991–2020 climate normals and NOAA ocean data.

High and low air temperatures and rainfall are 1991–2020 averages for Key West. Water temperatures are NOAA monthly coastal averages.

Winter (December to February)

Winter is Key West’s high season, and it is easy to see why. Days are sunny and in the mid to upper 70s, humidity drops, and rain is scarce. Every so often a cold front sweeps through, bringing a day or two of gusty north winds, choppy water and nights in the 50s. On the webcam, you can spot these days by the whitecaps and the jackets on visitors. The coldest temperature ever recorded in Key West is 41°F, and it has only hit that mark twice, in 1886 and 1981.

Spring (March to May)

Many locals consider spring the best season of all. It stays mostly dry, the water warms into the upper 70s by April, and afternoon highs climb into the 80s. March brings spring break crowds; by May the island quiets down, and the first humid, stormy days signal that the wet season is coming.

Summer (June to August)

Summer is hot and humid, with highs around 90°F and nights that rarely drop below 80°F. The ocean feels like bathwater, averaging 87°F by July. Most rain falls in short, heavy afternoon or evening thunderstorms that build quickly and then move on, often followed by a dramatic sunset. Watching one of these storms roll across the Southernmost Point on the webcam is a show in itself. Interestingly, Key West rarely breaks 95°F, because the surrounding ocean keeps temperatures in check. The island’s all-time record high is 97°F.

Fall (September to November)

September is the wettest month and the peak of the Atlantic hurricane season, and October is not far behind. It is also the quietest time for tourism, with the shortest lines at the buoy. By November, drier air returns, temperatures settle into the low 80s, and the island starts filling up again for the winter season. For more about storm season, see our hurricane season guide.
